Niels Henrik Cordelus Hoffmeyer (born June 3, 1836 in Copenhagen , † February 16, 1884 in Copenhagen) was a Danish meteorologist .

Life

Niels Hoffmeyer devoted himself to the military, took part in the war of 1864, lived in France from 1865 to 1866 for reasons of health, mainly dealt with meteorology and founded the Danish Meteorological Institute in Copenhagen in 1872 , with stations in Greenland , Iceland and the Faroe Islands brought into being.

He earned considerable merit by compiling synoptic weather maps, which show the prevailing weather conditions over a larger area at a given moment; he also examined the effect or distribution of land and water on temperature and air pressure on the northern coasts and the shores of the Mediterranean.

Honors

In 1883 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
