Nietzsche and the German spirit

Nietzsche and the German Spirit , subtitled Spreading and Impact of Nietzsche's Work in the German-Speaking Area , is an analytical bibliography on the history of Friedrich Nietzsche's impact in the German-speaking area between 1867 and 1945. The concept as a "bibliography" comes from the Germanist Richard Frank Krummel , who wrote the four-volume Work with the collaboration of his wife Evelyn S. Krummel between 1974 and 2006.

It lists almost 5,700 documents, most of them with abstracts and comments. The documents are mainly books, magazine articles and printed speeches on the subject of Nietzsche, but diary entries, correspondence and memories are also reproduced in order to give an impression of the intellectual climate of the times. Due to its approximate completeness, cross-references and explanations, the work can also be used as a reference work for part of German cultural history .

The title alludes to Friedrich Gundolf's work Shakespeare and the German Spirit (1911).

As far as the purely German-language literature by and about Nietzsche is concerned, the bibliography largely replaced older registers. If there is also criticism of some points (see review under web links ), the work is recognized and extremely helpful in Nietzsche research. In particular, questions relating to the history of reception can now be based on a large number of documents.

The work is published by Verlag de Gruyter , Berlin and New York, in the series of monographs and texts on Nietzsche research . "No. X “indicates the number in this row.
