Nigellus de Longchamp
Nigellus de Longchamp (also: Nigellus Wireker, Nigel von Canterbury, Nigel Witeker ) (* around 1130 , † around 1200 in Canterbury ) was an English Middle Latin poet and satirist .
It is said to come from a Norman family who moved to England. Around 1170 he entered the Christ Church monastery in Canterbury and became a priest. Among his works are the 1180 published speculum stultorum (dt. Fools mirror ), which experienced yet centuries later editions and the Tractatus contra curiales et officiales Cléricos in which he denounces nepotism, simony and ambition in the church.
The latter work is dedicated to Wilhelm von Longchamp , Bishop of Ely .
