Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku

The Chronicle Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku ( Japanese 日本 三代 実 録 , Eng . "Authentic records of three (government) epochs in Japan") is a chronicle of Japan for the years 858 to 887. It is the sixth and last part of the six official empire histories ( Rikkokushi ).

background

Work on this chronicle began at the beginning of the 890s by order of the Tennō Uda and lasted until 901. The exact start of the work is not certain. The "Outline of the Imperial Stories " ( Nihon Kiryaku ), which was created during the Heian period, indicates May 1, 892, but it is not certain whether this is an error. The time between 893 and 894 is generally assumed to be the time of origin. As a follow-up to the "Authentic Notes on Tennō Montoku of Japan" ( Nihon Montoku Tennō Jitsuroku ), it should cover the 30 years afterwards.

Fujiwara no Tokihira and Ōkura no Yoshiyuki were largely responsible for the compilation of the text . As another compilers were Minamoto no Yoshiari , Sugawara no Michizane and Mimune no masahira involved. Since Minamoto no Yoshiari died in 889 and Tennō Uda abdicated the following year 899, it is believed that the compilation was interrupted for a while. The work was then continued at the instigation of the Daigo- Tennō and ended in August 901.

content

The 50 fascicles of the work, written in classical Chinese , deal with the 30 years of government of the Tennō Seiwa , Yōzei and Kōkō . The Gangyō riots ( 元 慶 の 乱 ) are also mentioned here and there without being described in the detail density that is otherwise usual for the text. It also describes the Jōgan earthquake of 869 in book 16 .

The chronicle is followed by the historical work Shinkokushi ( 新 国史 , about "New National History"), which is sometimes referred to as Zoku Sandai Jitsuroku ( 続 三代 実 録 , about "Continuation of the authentic records of three (government) epochs").
