Nikandros (gem cutter)
Nikandros ( Greek Νίκανδρος ) was a Greek gem cutter who worked during the reign of Ptolemy III. (246 to 222 BC) was active.

A garnet set in gold has survived from Nicandros , in which the profile of Ptolemy's wife Berenike II is carved. The word ΕΠΟΕΙ (made it) engraved next to the signature allows Nikandros to be clearly identified as the maker of the piece. The portrait of a woman, typical for portraits of rulers of this time, is mainly attributed to Berenike because of the trimming of her hair. She sacrificed her hair to the goddess Aphrodite and requested the safe return of her husband from the Third Syrian War , the hair is said to have been placed under the stars as the hair of Berenike .
The stone has been in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore since 1942 .
