Niklas Westring

Niklas Westring (born November 13, 1797 in Gothenburg , † January 28, 1882 ) was a Swedish entomologist and arachnologist .

Westring's main job was from 1816 at the customs office in Gothenburg, where he was the customs administrator from 1834 to 1856.

He is best known for his book Araneae suecicae descriptae , in which he described 308 native Swedish spider species. 124 of these were already known to his predecessors Carl von Linné , Carl De Geer and Carl Jakob Sundevall .

He was on the board of directors of the Gothenburg Museum from 1840 to 1874 and a member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Gothenburg (1843) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1863).
