Nicocles (Salamis)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicocles , ancient Greek Νικοκλής , († probably between 362 and 358 BC) was since 374/373 BC. King of the ancient city-state of Salamis in Cyprus . As the successor to his father Euagoras I , he continued his philhellenic policy; Nevertheless, there were already beginnings of Hellenistic forms of rule and life in his work. For the Polis -Greeks, however, he seemed to be "oriental degenerate", which is why Isocrates dedicated three educational speeches to him. Nicocles probably died together with the Phoenician king Straton of Sidon during the satrap revolt (362 to 359/358 BC); His presumed son Euagoras II followed him as ruler of Salamis .
