Nikolai Dmitrievich Tarakanov

Nikolai Dmitrijewitsch Tarakanow ( Russian: Николай Дмитриевич Тараканов ; born May 19, 1934 in Gremyachiye Voronezh Oblast ) is a Russian army officer. He commanded the units of the Soviet Army involved in dealing with the Chernobyl nuclear disaster .

Military career

Nikolai Tarakanov joined the Soviet army as a teenager. He earned a doctorate in military science as part of his military career. He specialized in the losses and conditions after a nuclear war , in particular possible forms of deployment for the pioneer troops . From 1970 he carried out practical experiments in Noginsk near Moscow. He published two instruction books for the Soviet armed forces regarding reconstruction measures after a nuclear war.

Nikolai Tarakanov retired as major general .

Chernobyl disaster

As the deputy commander of the civil defense forces in the Soviet Union, he was given the task of commanding the military units involved in the clean-up work from 1986 onwards. In 2019 he published his memories of the catastrophe on behalf of the state together with two other authors.
