Nikolai Malikoff

Nikolai Malikoff ( Russian Николай Петрович Маликов Nikolai Petrovich Malikow , Ukrainian Миколай Петрович Маліков Mykolaj Petrowytsch Malikow * 1874 in Kiev , Russian Empire ; † 20th April 1931 in Riga , Latvia ) was a Russian-Ukrainian film director and actor with intense career in German Silent movie.

Live and act

Malikoff began his stage career in 1896 in the Tsarist Empire. Less than two decades later, Malikoff, who had already shown interest in Russian cinematography, which was still in its infancy, came into film in 1908 - initially as an assistant director, and shortly afterwards as a director. With the exception of “ Magnolia ” (Магнолия), hardly any of these films, which often made use of literary models by Russian great authors (Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, Alexander Pushkin) and are now almost entirely lost, was successful.

As a result of the revolutionary upheavals since 1917, the ensuing civil war and the economic hardship (1918 to 1920) in Russia, Malikoff decided to emigrate in 1921 and left the country for Latvia to stage plays in Riga. The following year he found himself in Paris and in 1922 went to Berlin, where he directed his first German film with fellow emigrant Olga Gsovskaja . However, this was not a commercial success and went largely unnoticed. After a few more attempts at directing, Malikoff, who had an impressive appearance, was brought in front of the camera and was involved in a large number of German cinema productions until the end of the silent film. In “ Rasputin's Love Adventure ” in 1928 he played one of his few main roles, the eponymous, sinister monk.

Barely able to speak German, Malikoff returned to Latvia with the advent of talkies, where he died in 1931.
