Nikolai Vladimirovich Mesenzow ( Russian Николай Владимирович Мезенцов , scientific transliteration. Nikolaj Vladimirovič Mezencov ; Nikolay Vladimirovich Mezentsov) (* April 11 . Jul / 23. April  1827 greg. , † August 4 jul. / 16th August  1878 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian statesman, general (1871) and state councilor (1877). He was the head of the Third Division of the Emperor's Secret Chancellery (1876), d. H. the tsarist secret police. He began his military career in 1845 and took part in the Crimean War. In 1864 he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Gendarmerie Corps, in 1876 head of the "Third Department" ( Третье отделение ).

Mesentsov was stabbed to death on August 4, 1878 by the anarchist Sergei Kravchinsky in Saint Petersburg in response to the execution of Ivan Kowalski .
