The Sankt Nikolai church is a three-aisled late Romanesque-early Gothic basilica and is located in the cemetery in the lower town of Dippoldiswalde .

history

Two stone church buildings are known from the founding time of Dippoldiswalde (first documented mention in 1218), the Marienkirche in the upper town (mining settlement) above the Weißeritz and the Nikolaikirche in the Waldhufendorf in the Weißeritzaue .

The Nikolaikirche was built in the first half of the 13th century, it has hardly been structurally changed in the following centuries and has served as a cemetery church for a long time. In the years 1882-1883 the church was restored by the architect and church builder Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel . It was designed in the style of the time and represents an example of the interpretation of a medieval room in the 19th century. In 1995 and 1996, monument conservation studies were carried out.

The Nikolaikirche houses evidence of medieval art, e.g. B. a sculpture of St. Nicholas . In addition, the memorials to the victims of the two world wars are erected here. The frescoes from the 13th or 14th century with picture cycles that were originally arranged on the north and south walls are of art historical importance. On the south wall they can still be seen today in two rows of 15 frescoes each. The top row shows scenes from the Easter story, the bottom row shows scenes from the life of St. Nicholas, including:

The cycle of pictures on the north wall is now plastered over and therefore no longer visible.

There is an interesting comparison to the Kunigunden Church in Borna , both in terms of age, construction, location, use and relationship to the town church. In both cases the town church is a St. Mary's church.
