Nikolas Rose
Nikolas Rose (* 1947 ) is a British sociologist and social theorist. He has been Professor of Sociology at King's College London since 2012 . Prior to that, he held the position of James Martin White Professor of Sociology at the London School of Economics . He was also director of the Center for the Study of Bioscience, Biomedicine, Biotechnology and Society (BIOS) in London.
In 2020 Rose was elected to the British Academy .
life and work
After studying biology, Rose devoted herself to sociological and historical topics. He mainly studied the social effects of psychiatry and psychopharmacology. He also researched the genealogy of subjectivity, the history of empiricism within sociology, and the rationality behind political power structures. He acted as editor of the journal Economy and Society and is still co-editor of BioSocieties , an interdisciplinary science journal.
Rose grew up in a Jewish family in London. His brother Steven P. Rose is a professor at the Open University .
In 1989 Rose founded the History of the Present Research Network , an international network of researchers whose work is heavily influenced by Michel Foucault .
