The Church of St. Nicholas ( Russian Храм во имя святителя Николая ) is a Russian Orthodox church building in the Kazakh city of Talghar . The church, built in 1908, belongs to the Astana and Almaty eparchy .

history

A priest was appointed to the village as early as 1861, and the parish was founded three years later. A first church building was erected in 1866. In 1908, today's larger structure was erected in place of the old church. It was designed by Sergei Troparew with the participation of the military engineer Jakow Porozhin . The design is based on the St. Nicholas Cathedral in neighboring Almaty .

After the Bolsheviks came to power , the persecution of religious activities and clerical dignitaries began. In February 1920 the priest and deacon of the parish were arrested and murdered by the Bolsheviks. In 1930 the church was closed and looted. The crosses and bells were removed, and the domes on the structure were dismantled. During the Second World War , the weaving and sewing workshops were in the basement. The church was later used as a venue and eventually a cinema. In the 1980s, the local authorities decided to house a sports school with a pool in the building. For this purpose, repair and maintenance measures were started, the floors were removed, but when the plaster was removed from the walls, it was found that the building was made of wood. Thereupon the plans for a sports school were given up. It stood empty for several years and became dilapidated.

In 1986 a group of parishioners approached the city's executive committee with a request that the church building be returned. At the end of 1988 it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. The following restoration work lasted until 1995. On May 22, 1995, the church was rededicated by the Archbishop of Alma-Ata and Semipalatinsk.
