The the Cathedral Saint Nicholas ( Russian Собор во имя святителя Николая ) is a Russian Orthodox church building in Kazakh Almaty . The cathedral, built between 1906 and 1908, is located in the city center and belongs to the Astana and Almaty eparchy .

history

In 1904, residents of the southwestern part of Werny asked the bishop of Turkestan and Tashkent for permission to raise funds for the construction of a church. The bishop finally agreed. In 1906 the construction of the church building began. On December 14, 1908, the construction work was completed and the new cathedral was dedicated to Nicholas of Myra .

After the Russian October Revolution , the persecution of religious activities began. In the 1920s and 1930s, Nicholas Cathedral was a haven for many people exiled to Central Asia, including many clergy and religious. In the 1930s, after most of the churches were closed, there were only two active places of worship in Alma-Ata, the Nicholas Cathedral and the Kazan Cathedral . Since the Cathedral of the Assumption of Christ was closed in 1929, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas became the cathedral of the Eparchy of Alma-Ata and Turkestan.

In February 1936, the Eparch of Alma-Ata was arrested and the St. Nicholas Cathedral was closed. A museum of atheism was in the building until World War II . After that, the building was used by the military as a horse stable. After the end of the war, the new eparch from Alma-Ata tried to return the church building to the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1946 it was returned to the church. The building was in poor condition at the time. The domes were badly damaged and the bell tower was torn down, the iconostasis and icons were no longer preserved. The repair work on the cathedral began immediately after the return, so that the altar could already be consecrated in spring of the year. In addition, the St. Nicholas Cathedral was again the seat of the eparchy of Alma-Ata.

After the end of the Soviet Union and the return of the Ascension Cathedral to the church, the seat of the eparchy was moved there again in 1995. In the same year a cross was erected in the cathedral to commemorate the victims of the repression.
