Nicomachus (painter)
Nicomachus of Thebes was an ancient Greek painter who lived from about 360 to 320 BC. Was active. Perhaps he came from the city of Thebes .
According to Pliny , Nicomachus was the son and pupil of the painter Aristeides of Thebes . He himself taught his brother Ariston, his son Aristeides of Thebes II and Philoxenus of Eretria .
Pliny lists several works that are said to have come from Nicomachus, including a depiction of the rape of Persephone . He was a representative of four-color painting and is said to have painted very quickly. He was the first to portray Odysseus with a pileus .
His paintings he created, among others, on behalf of Macedonian rulers and tyrants Aristratos of Sikyon . Some works were later brought to Rome. None of the paintings of Nicomachus have survived, but it has been assumed that a mural in a tomb in Vergina in Macedonia goes back to Nicomachus.
