The Nikon F-801 (on the US market Nikon N8008 ) is a single lens reflex camera ( analog camera ) from the Japanese manufacturer Nikon , which was added to the range in 1988 as a camera model for advanced amateurs. It was manufactured until 1991 and was popular with professionals because of its good performance and reliability.

In 1991 the improved model variant Nikon F-801s (or Nikon N8008s ) appeared, which was sold until 1994. The successor model is the Nikon F90 .

description

The F-801 uses some of the components of the top-of-the-range F4 , which appeared a little later in the year ; this includes the AM 200 autofocus unit and the quartz- controlled shutter electronics . At that time, their performance data , such as the flash sync time of 1/250 s, were regarded as correspondingly outstanding for the amateur class . The F-801 was the first SLR with a fastest shutter speed of 1/8000 s and the first Nikon with a liquid crystal display (LCD).

The digital thumbwheel for operation was also new. As with all SLR models from the manufacturer to this day, it took over the choice of shutter speed , aperture number or another setting, depending on the operating mode , which could be selected by pressing a button. This represented a radical departure from having their own setting wheels for the various functions. To adjust the aperture electronically, the actual aperture ring on the lens must be turned to the smallest value, and this method has also been retained to this day.

The film speed is either by the DX code of a miniature cartridge sampled Type 135 (ISO 6400 to 6) can be set manually or can.

The high-eyepoint - viewfinder (for eyeglass wearers) has 92% image coverage and a well-read by daylight or LED backlit liquid crystal display, the very informative fails. The simple focusing screen with light meter markings can be exchanged for one of two others. The exposure metering methods are open aperture metering , the then relatively new matrix metering and the usual center-weighted integral metering .

Model variant

The F-801s (for " speed ") is an improvement on the original model. It has the popular spot metering and autofocus focus tracking for moving subjects. Faster and quieter engines were also used. Later, the "s" will repeatedly be the name for particularly fast camera models, which are aimed primarily at sports photographers.

equipment

All lenses with an F bayonet from the Ai and autofocus lenses from the AF standard can be used on the camera .

The camera's flash system complies with the Nikon TTL standard. It offers synchronization to the second shutter curtain , which must be selected on the flash unit - which is no longer possible with more modern devices that expect this mode to be selected on the camera.

On the front of the camera there is a two-pin connector for the proprietary cable release .

Either the MF-20 , which can imprint the time of the picture in the picture, or the MF-21 , which also provides the functions of focus trap and exposure series , could be purchased as a data backplane .

Instead of a battery grip, only the external lithium ion battery DB-5 was offered. It can be kept warm close to the body during operations in extreme cold, while a cable leads to a dummy battery that is inserted into the camera.
