Sachem Ninigret II in 1681

Ninigret (* around 1610, † around 1677), also known as Juanemo , was a sachem of the Eastern Niantic . He allied himself in 1637 in the Pequot War with the English and the Narraganset against the Pequot . In the King Philip War of 1676, however, he remained neutral. He married his sister Quaiapen to Mriksah , son of the sachem of the Narraganset Canonicus . In 1667 he sold large tracts of land from his tribe to English settlers.

Succession

His daughter followed him as chief. This was replaced by her half-brother Ninigret the Younger , who also sold large parts of the land to the Niantic in 1709 and probably died in 1722. He had two sons, Charles Augustus and George . Charles Augustus died shortly after his father, leaving behind a son who was only recognized as a sachem by parts of the tribe, while the remaining members of the tribe accepted his uncle George as chief. From 1735 he ruled over the entire tribe. His successor was his son Thomas Ninigret in 1746 .
