Nishiyama Soin
Nishiyama Sōin ( Japanese 西山 宗 因 , born as Nishiyama Toyoichi ( 西山 豊 一 ); * 1605 in the province of Higo ; † May 5, 1682 probably in Kyoto ) was a Japanese Renga poet.
Sōin was a samurai in his youth in the service of a daimyo on Kyūshū. In 1622 he went to Kyoto, where he established himself as a Renga poet. Here he was the founder of the Danrin poetry school (based on the poem Danrin Toppyaku , 1675), within which the haiku poetry established itself from its predecessors.
