Nitai Palit

Nitai Palit (actually Nityananda Palit ; born March 8, 1923 in Cuttack ; † July 26, 1990 ibid) was an Indian director of the Oriya film .

Life

Palit started out as a playwright and theater producer and was active in the Indian People's Theater Association . He had his first contact with the film in 1953 as a performer in Amari Gaan Jhua by Vinay Bannerjee . The following year, Palit made his film debut as a director with the playwright Manoranjan Das with Kedar Gouri , a tragic love story . His breakthrough came in 1965 with Malajanha , a film adaptation of the classic Oriya novel of the same name by Upendra Kishore Dasfrom 1922. Jharana Das and Akshay Kumar played the main roles in this melodramatic film epic about the oppression of women in traditional Orissan society .

In the 1970s and 80s he was awarded the Orissa Film Award for best director by the Orissa government several times and in 1982 for his life's work.

He died of a heart attack at the age of 67. In memory of him, the Orissa government annually awards a “Nitai Palit Award” to a filmmaker for his or her contribution to Oriya film.
