Njombe (District)

Location of Njombe

The district of Njombe in the southern highlands of Tanzania was one of a total of six districts in the Iringa region and had about 420,000 inhabitants.

The small town of the same name and former capital of the Njombe district is located at an altitude of around 1,900 m and has around 20,000 inhabitants. Around 1945/1946, the city was ravaged by a plague of lions that killed more than 1,000 residents.

The city of Njombe is the seat of the Diocese of Njombe .

Redistribution

In 2012 the Iringa region was divided into a northern part of the same name and a southern part called Njombe . The districts were also redistributed and two districts Njombe ( Njombe Town and Njombe Rural ) were created whose borders, however, are not congruent with the previous district.
