Wanging'ombe is a district of the region Njombe in Tanzania . Its administrative headquarters are in Igwachanaya . The district borders the Mbeya and Iringa regions to the north, the Njombe district to the east and south, and the Makete district to the west .

The district has an area of ​​3441 square kilometers and around 160,000 inhabitants (2012 census). The area is located in the southern highlands of Tanzania and rises from north to south. The lowlands in the north are between 900 and 1200 meters above sea level. This is followed by a hilly country with heights of 1200 to 1600 meters, in the southwest the Kipengere Mountains reach heights of up to 2800 meters above sea level. Four out of five years there will be mild droughts in the lowlands. In the hill country it rains 600 to 1000 millimeters per year, in the highlands 1000 to 1600 millimeters. Precipitation falls in a rainy season from November to May. The cooler dry season lasts from June to October. The temperatures are mostly between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, in the higher elevations it is cooler.

The district was established in 2012 when the former Njombe district was split up when Njombe became a separate region.

The largest ethnic group in the district are the Bena , almost 85 percent of the population belong to them. The population rose from 127,125 in 1988 to 131,351 in the 2002 census and further to 161,816 in 2012. That year around two-thirds of the over-five-year-olds spoke Swahili, almost ten percent Swahili and English, and a little less than a quarter were illiterate.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 107 elementary schools and 16 secondary schools in the district.
  • Health: In 2014, a hospital, three health centers and 37 pharmacies were available to provide medical care for the population. The percentage of medically assisted births rose from 56 percent in 2005 to 94 percent in 2014.
  • Water: In 2015, around two thirds of the population were supplied with clean and safe water.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Agriculture contributes nearly ninety percent to the district's income. The most important field crop is maize; wheat, potatoes, beans, peas, sweet potatoes, cassava, bambara nuts, soybeans, finger millet, sunflower, peanuts, pyrethrum, sugar cane, fruit, vegetables and coffee are also grown. Productivity of 2.25 tons per hectare is below the Tanzanian average of 6 to 7.5 tons. Of the 40,000 households in 2012, almost two thirds kept pets, mainly chickens and cattle.
  • Forestry: With a government requirement of 1.5 million tree plantings annually, over 2.5 million trees were planted in the 2013/14 season and even over 4 million trees in 2014/15.
  • Railroad: Wanging'ombe has a station on the TAZARA Railway Line, which runs from Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia .
  • Roads: The main road connection is the paved national road T1 from Dar es Salaam via Iringa in the east to Mbeya and on to Zambia in the west.

A district council is elected every 5 years in the district. The chair is held by Anthon Emmanuel Mahwata (as of 2020) Template: future / in 4 years.

Attractions

  • Mpanga Kipengere Game Reserve: In the west of the district is the 1,574 square kilometer game reserve in the Kiperenge Mountains. The scenic area is ideal for hiking. It is inhabited by primates and many species of birds, the nasal chameleon is endemic here.
