Nkayi is a city and a municipality in Bouenza - Department in the southwest of the Republic of Congo . The city is the fourth largest city in the country with about 72,000 inhabitants at the 2007 census . Nkayi is one of the largest sugar production centers in the Republic of the Congo.

The Congo-Ocean Railway has a station in Nkayi. Yokangassi Airport is also about five kilometers south of the city .

history

The city has been called Jacob since 1887 , named after a French engineer who was supposed to find the best route for the Congo-Ocean Railway. When the city had a population of about 25,000 in 1975, it was renamed Nkayi after a native language .
