No. 74 Squadron was a unit of the Royal Air Force .

history

First World War

The Army Air Force Royal Flying Corps provided the No. 74 Squadron on July 1, 1917 in Colney London. After six months of initial training on the Avro 504 K, the instruction on the Royal Aircraft Factory SE 5A fighter took place . In March 1918 the company was relocated to France. The unit stayed in France until February 1919. After returning to Great Britain, it was disbanded on July 3, 1919.

Between the wars

On September 3, 1935, the squadron was re-established to operate from Malta . Ten months later, the unit equipped with Hawker Demon returned to Great Britain. In April 1937, the unit received new Gloster Gauntlet aircraft . In February 1939 they were replaced by the Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I.

Second World War

After the outbreak of World War II , the Squadron took over patrol flights over Great Britain. The first major operation took place in the evacuation of Dunkirk . In the Battle of Britain the Squadron of No. 12 Group subordinated. In April 1942 the unit was relocated to the Middle East. There she received Hawker Hurricanes . After six months they were replaced by Spitfires again. The unit was returned just in time for the Allied landing in Normandy.

post war period

In May 1945 the jet age began with the Gloster Meteor F.3 . These were replaced by Hawker Hunter in 1957 . After moving to Coltishall , the conversion to English Electric Lightning began in June 1960 as the first season . Due to this fact, the squadron flew demonstrations at the air shows in Farnborough and Paris. The demonstration also included the synchronous flying of a role of all 9 aircraft in the formation. The Lightning of the different versions remained the aircraft of the association until the disbandment of the squadron on August 25, 1971 in Tengah with the Far East Air Force. From October 19, 1984 to October 1, 1992, the Squadron with McDonnell Phantom F4J was set up again to be converted into a training squadron with BAE Hawk on October 5, 1992 . The final dissolution took place on September 22, 2000.
