Nob Island (short for English knob , German 'Knopf, Knubbel, Knauf') is an island in the Wilhelm Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is the largest in the Anagram Islands group and is located on the south side of the French Passage .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1961. It is named after a black and almost ice-free rock formation on the north side of the island, which serves as a helpful landmark for navigating through the French Passage.
