The four Nobel Laureate sculptures in Nobel Square

The Nobel Square is a public square in the district of Victoria & Alfred Waterfront the South African city of Cape Town . It was inaugurated in December 2005 and is the site of sculptures by the country's four Nobel Peace Prize winners , Albert John Luthuli , Desmond Tutu , Frederik Willem de Klerk and Nelson Mandela . The idea for the establishment goes back to Ebrahim Rasool , who was Prime Minister of the Western Cape Province from 2004 to 2008 , and his predecessor Marthinus van Schalkwyk . The square, the establishment of which was supported by the Provincial Government of the Western Cape, was created after consultations with Albert Luthuli's family and the three surviving award winners, who also attended the opening together with Luthuli's daughter and the Norwegian ambassador to South Africa.

The sculptures, the height of which is slightly larger than the height of the four people represented, are set up in a semicircular arrangement so that Table Mountain is visible in their backs . Quotations are engraved on the floor in front of the figures. There is also a fifth sculpture on the square entitled “Peace and Democracy”, which is intended to honor the role of women and children in the peace and democratization process in South Africa. All five sculptures are made of bronze and stand on a 386 square meter granite surface . Ten artists from the country were invited to submit proposals as part of a competition, from which Claudette Schreuders was selected for the design of the four figures of the Nobel Prize winners and Noria Mabasa for the sculpture "Peace and Democracy".
