Ebrahim Rasool (2012)

Ebrahim Rasool (born July 15, 1962 in Cape Town ) is a South African politician. He is a member of the ANC and was Prime Minister of the Western Cape Province from April 2004 to July 2008 .

Life

Rasool is of Cape Malay origin. He completed a teacher training course at the University of Cape Town and in 1984 obtained the "Higher Diploma in Education". During his student days he became politically active and in 1983 a leading member of the anti-apartheid organization " United Democratic Front ". In 1984 Rasool also became National Secretary of the "Call Of Islam" organization, a rather liberal group within Islamic organizations.

From 1985 on, Rasool taught at Spine Road Senior Secondary School. In the same year, however, he was imprisoned for 16 months without trial and then excluded from political activity for 18 months. After this period, the end of apartheid set in; during this transitional phase, Rasool was Vice-Rector at his old university from 1991 to 1994 . During those years he was also treasurer of the ANC in the Cape Province . From 1994 to 1998 Rasool was responsible for health and social affairs within the government of the Western Cape in the Executive Council, and from 2001 to 2004 he was responsible for finance and economic development. In 1998 he took over the chairmanship of the ANC in the Western Cape, which he held until 2005.

In April 2004 Rasool was appointed as the successor to Marthinus van Schalkwyk as Premier of the Western Cape, the latter joined in the wake of the entry of the NNP into the ANC Rasool's party.

One of Rasool's concerns was to bring politics and religion closer together. A series of conflicts arose with Cape Town's Mayor Helen Zille from the Democratic Alliance , so Rasool accused Zille of endangering the construction of the Cape Town Stadium , while Zille in turn accused Rasool of withholding funds for economic development and housing construction. A multi-party coalition ruled Cape Town to the exclusion of the ANC.

Rasool was dismissed by the ANC National Executive Committee in July 2008 , and was succeeded by Lynne Brown .

Family and other things

Rasool is married and has two children. He speaks English, Afrikaans and German.
