Nocelle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nocelle is a place on the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana) in the southern Italian region of Campania , province of Salerno .

Location and dates

The village is located at about 440 meters above Positano on the southern slope of the 1443 meter high Monte Sant'Angelo a tre pizzi . It has around 200 inhabitants and administratively belongs to the municipality of Positano. It takes its name from the noci , the walnut trees typical of the area. The center of the village is the Piazza Santa Croce with the church of the same name. The local saint is the Madonna del Carmine , her patron saint is celebrated on July 16.

History and economy

Nocelle has only been connected to the road network since 2002 and was previously only accessible on foot. It has therefore retained much of the original character of an agrarian mountain village on a steep slope on the Amalfi Coast. Typical of the local economy are the vegetable crops that are cultivated on narrow terraces and the occasional vineyard. Since the connection to the road network, tourism has also played a certain role in the local economy. Since the road ends about 200 meters before the village, Nocelle - as the only village on the Amalfi Coast - is completely car-free.

tourism

Nocelle has a trattoria and several bed and breakfasts . The place is about halfway up the mountain hiking trail Sentiero degli Dei ("Path of the Gods"). From Positano you reach Nocelle after about two to three hours ascent (1,700 steps), from there after another three hours the plateau of Agerola (640 m).

literature

The writer Stefan Andres set Nocelle a literary monument under the pseudonym Quercelle in his novel The Flood, written in Positano (1949, new edition 2008) (Chapter 10). His story Der Urlaub also takes place in Nocelle (Frankfurter Zeitung May 17, 1942, reprinted in: Stefan Andres, Terraces in Light, Italian Stories , edited by Dieter Richter, Göttingen 2009, pp. 221–224).
