The Nockamixon State Park is a State Park in Pennsylvania in the United States . It is in north Bucks County . The park is 2,138 hectares and is a popular holiday area. The name Nockamixon comes from the Lenni-Lenape- Indians who originally lived here and called the area "nocha-miska-ing".

history

Native Americans from the Lenni Lenape Indian tribe first settled in the area where the park is today. Scottish and German immigrants came to this area between 1730 and 1740 and from 1742 the township of Nockamixon was established. Most people were employed in the timber industry until the 19th century, when that industry was exhausted.

1961 began with the creation of a park. The state bought 290 farms and homesteads from the surrounding townships and in 1965 the construction of the Nockamixon Park began. A dam was built in October 1968. The dam was completed in June 1973 and the lake began to continue to fill with water. In 1973 the park was connected to the power grid.

The small town of Tohickon , which was formerly called Stovertown , was flooded. The rest was mostly farmland with farms. The farms, houses and bridges were destroyed before the flooding except for one bridge made of stones. This bridge, which originally led over Tohickon Creek, can still be found today in about 25 meters of water.

The park was originally named Tohickon State Park after the main river that feeds it with water . In 1965 the State Geographic Board renamed the park.

The park has been open to the public since August 1977.
