Nocturne Quadrille

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nocturne Quadrille is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op.120). It was first performed on September 24, 1852 in the Volksgarten in Vienna .

Remarks

The Nocturne Quadrille exists in two versions. Joseph Christian von Zedlitz had written a ballad entitled Die Nachtliche Heerschau . The composer Anton Emil Titl (1809–1882) composed music for this purpose. The resulting work, known as the tone painting, was performed in Vienna with some success. This prompted Johann Strauss to compose this quadrille. For the shorter version, the source states that Strauss used motifs from Titl's music. In the description of the second (longer) version it is said that he adapted to the character of Titl's piece but did not quote any motif from it. Seen in this way, these are two different pieces that are performed under the same name and the same opus number. Neither works seem to have had too much success in the long run. They are not among the composer's greatest successes.

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 4 minutes and 41 seconds or 6 minutes and 30 seconds. These times may vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
