Nokia 1100

The Nokia 1100 is a mobile phone from the Finnish manufacturer Nokia . The mobile phone, which was released at the end of 2003 and deliberately kept simple, was designed primarily for the market in developing countries and is the most successful mobile phone to date, with over 200 million units sold.

At least in 2007 it was the best-selling electronic device, ahead of the iPod and Playstation, and this year its sales were around 1 million copies per week.

The phone developed under the working name Penny had few extras, but they were designed for use in areas with an irregular power supply and demanding environmental conditions: It had a non-slip grip, a dust-proof housing and could be used as a flashlight. The extras were based on intensive market research in the later sales countries, where Nokia representatives visited residents' homes to find out what the most important requirements for a mobile phone in this region are. The flashlight in particular turned out to be a particular selling point. It led to the nickname ka-torchi for the cell phone. Nokia market researchers developed the feature while watching users of other cell phones use their illuminated screen as an improvised light.

When advertising in India, the largest single market for the Nokia 1100, Nokia focused entirely on the lower end of the market. Ads showing the cell phone in a truck at the end of a lonely street highlighted its suitability for remote areas. Nokia continued to emphasize the benefit that consumers would have from buying originals. And while the 1100 was not the first mobile phone that could text messages in Hindi, Nokia managed to get that image in the minds of consumers through advertising.

The Nokia 1100 has a monochrome display with a resolution of 96 × 65 pixels, is suitable for making calls, sending SMS and has an alarm function. In the absence of a browser or other internet services, the cell phone has no integrated data transmission standards such as GPRS or UMTS . The battery lasted about 4 days, while reception quality and reliability were quite good compared to other cell phones. The in-house Series 30 operating system is used as the operating system.

John Herrman from the technology blog Gizmodo describes the cell phone as too light, too small and technically hopelessly outdated even for 2003. He sees precisely this as one of the success criteria of the cell phone, since it was not developed for technology-savvy Americans who have access to the latest technology, but rather a software update should be an exception for a market in which the supply of spare parts is difficult and where the general telephone infrastructure is still in its infancy. Disadvantages such as the simple technology turn into advantages under these conditions. The low weight, in turn, ensures that it can withstand falls relatively well. "The phone should survive as long as possible, it should be able to make calls and send text messages for as long as possible for as little money as possible."

Nokia 1100, which were produced in the former Nokia factory in Bochum , are said to have reached five-digit prices on the black market because a software error should make it possible to access the numbers of other participants with them.
