Nongthombam Biren Singh (born January 1, 1961 in Luwangsangbam Mamang Leikai, Manipur , India) is an Indian politician and has been Chief Minister of Manipur since March 15, 2017 .

biography

Before starting his political career, Nongthombam Biren worked as a professional footballer and later as a journalist. As a footballer, he was a player at BSF Jhalluder and took part in various foreign matches across India. As a journalist he was the editor of a popular magazine Maharolgi Thoudang in Manipur.

In 2002 he was elected as a candidate for the Democratic Revolutionary People's Party (DRPP), a small regional party in Manipur, in constituency 2-Heingang in the parliament of Manipur. The two MPs of the DRPP supported the Congress Party government and Biren Singh received a post of State Secretary in the government of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh . Shortly before the all-India parliamentary elections in 2004 , the DRPP united with the Congress Party. As a Congress Party candidate, Singh was able to maintain his constituency 2-Heingang in the elections to the Parliament of Manipur in 2007 and 2012. From 2007 to 2012 he was Minister for Irrigation and Flood Prevention, as well as Youth and Sport. In 2012 he resigned from the cabinet, after which his relationship with the Chief Minister deteriorated increasingly. In October 2016 there was an open break between Nongthombam Biren and Okram Ibobi Singh. Biren accused the Chief Minister, who has been in office since 2002, of inaction. Major problems facing the state would not be addressed. On October 7, 2016, Biren Singh resigned from all party offices and officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on October 17, 2016 .

In the parliamentary elections in Manipur in February 2017, the BJP was able to increase its number of seats from zero to 21 (from 60 seats) compared to the 2012 election. The Congress Party, on the other hand, lost its previous absolute mandate majority and got 28 seats. The BJP then negotiated with the other MPs elected to parliament (4 NPP , 4 NPF , 1 LJP , 1 AITC ) and reached a coalition agreement. On March 13, 2017, Singh was unanimously elected leader of the BJP parliamentary group in the parliament of Manipur and on March 15, 2017 he was sworn in as Chief Minister. He is the first Chief Minister of Manipur from the ranks of the BJP.

Biren is married. He and his wife Nongthombam (O) Heiyainu Devi have two daughters and a son. Reading and traveling are given as his pastimes.
