The Noord-Zuidlijn , also Noord / Zuid-lijn , in German "North-South Line", is an underground route of the Amsterdam Metro . It is served by the M52 line. The opening took place on July 21, 2018. Its construction was extremely controversial due to the previous history of the metro and the complicated system under the historic city center.

history

A north-south line already existed in the 1968 subway construction plan on which today's metro is based. However, it was decided at that time to build it only after the current route of the lines M51, M53 and M54 between Centraal Station and Amstelstation, as it would cost more and subsidence could occur. Due to budget overruns and great social resistance, which manifested itself among other things in the strikes on the Nieuwmarkt , it was initially decided in 1975 not to build any more underground lines. In the 1990s, however, the plans were revived as tunneling technology had developed significantly. The construction of the line was decided on November 27, 1996 by the city council. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 22, 2002, and the actual construction work began in 2003.

The M52 line travels the entire Noord / Zuidlijn from Noord to the Zuid station. An extension from Zuid to Schiphol Airport could be created later . Originally it was planned to use a second line - M58 - between Noord and Amstelveen Westwijk to reinforce the lines M51 and M52. However, the A 10 motorway in the Zuid area is to be widened, which is why the Amstelveenlijn can no longer be connected to the Ring- or Noord / Zuidlijn. The M58 line is therefore unlikely to come about.

business

When the Noord-Zuidlijn went into operation, the rest of the tram and bus network was heavily reorganized. The reason was that they wanted to align the lines with the new underground line. The M52 is thus the backbone of Amsterdam's local traffic. It runs mainly every 6 minutes.
