The Norðfjarðargöng are a road tunnel in the east of Iceland .
They lie in the course of the Norðfjarðarvegur
between the places Neskaupstaður and Eskifjörður . So far, the road has passed through the Oddsskarðsgöng tunnel , which was not safe for winter.
The tunnel itself is 7542 m long. Construction began in October 2013 and was originally scheduled to open in September 2017. On September 25, 2015, the then Interior Minister Ólöf Nordal triggered the blast for the last 5 m. After the further interior work on the tunnel, it was officially opened on November 11, 2017.
