The I-League 2nd Division is the second highest division in Indian football after the I-League . The I-League 2nd Division was introduced in 2008, which was previously called the National Football League 2nd Division.

The second Indian soccer league was played for the first time in 2008. The first game of the newly introduced league was played by the Mohammedan Sporting Club and Amity United FC . From 2008 to 2011 the league was sponsored by the natural gas and oil company ONGC and was called the ONGC I-League 2nd Division at the time . In October 2008 ONGC ended the sponsorship.
In the 2008 season, the Mohammedan Sporting Club , Mumbai FC , Vasco SC and Prayag United rose to the I-League . Pune FC , Shillong Lajong FC , Chirag United Kerala and Salgaocar Sports Club followed a season later .
Since 2010 only two teams have been allowed to advance to the top division. FC ONGC and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited SC made it into the I-League in 2010 . In 2011 Shillong Lajong FC made their second promotion with Sporting Clube de Goa . A season later, the promoted FC ONGC and United Sikkim FC were called . Rangdajied United FC and the Mohammedan Sporting Club qualified for the 2013/14 season .
In the 2013/14 season, the rules were changed to the effect that only the master is required to advance.

In two groups with six teams each, the teams play their games in a neutral stadium. The three best clubs in a group play the championship in a final group using the same mode as before. The master rises to the I-League .
