The Norðfjarðarvegur is a main road in the east of Iceland .

The road 92 starts on Hringvegur before the village Reyðarfjörður . In town this street is initially called Ægisgata and later Austurvegur and runs close to the shore. About 4 km behind the village the 1000 m long hall of the Alcoa Fjarðaál aluminum works begins . The Grjótá stream originally ran across the factory premises. It is now diverted east of the area. The Norðfjarðarvegur leads past the headland Hólmanes into Eskifjörður . After crossing the Eskifjarðará river, the Norðfjarðarvegur disappears for 7542 m in the Norðfjarðargöng . On the other side in Fannardalur, after 5 km, it reaches the Skuggahlíðarvegur, its previous course and has now crossed the Norðfjarðará. In Neskaupstaður the Norðfjarðarvegur ends at the ferry terminal, from which a ferry departs from Brekkuþorp in Mjóifjörður in winter .

In the past, Neskaupstaður could only be reached via Eskifjörður by sea from Vöðlavík bay, later from Viðfjörður . In 1949 a road connection was made possible over the 705 m high Oddsskarð . From 1977 this road ran through the single-lane Oddsskarðsgöng tunnel . This is at an altitude of 632 m and was not winter-safe. That is why it was replaced by the Norðfjarðargöng in 2017. Also in November 2017, the first part of the Norðfjarðarvegur from Egilsstaðir almost to Reyðarfjörður was rededicated to the ring road. The former course of the ring road became Skriðdals- og Breiðdalsvegur S95 , this is partly not yet paved and not always passable in winter.
