The Skriðdals- og Breiðdalsvegur is a main road in the east of Iceland . It was part of the Ringstrasse until November 2017 .
Part of the Norðfjarðarvegur and the entire Suðurfjarðavegur with the Fáskrúðsfjarðargöng became the ring road in November 2017 . The Skriðdals- og Breiðdalsvegur has had the number since the rededication that was never given before. It rises to a height of 470 m. The distance from Egilsstaðir to Höfn í Hornafirði is 254 km via the ring road , 244 km via Skriðdals- og Breiðdalsvegur , of which 24 km are not yet paved. The shortest road connection leads over the Axarvegur with 187 km, of which 28 km are without solid roads. The Skriðdals- og Breiðdalsvegur partly still leads over single-lane bridges and has a gradient of up to 12% and is not always passable in winter.
The road continues straight south from Egilsstaðir while the ring road branches off to the east. It runs east of the Lögurinn and Hallormsstaðaskógur . The Upphéraðsvegur branches off to the west and leads over the Austurleið to the Kárahnjúkar dam . The Þórdalsheiðarvegur leads east into the Reyðarfjörður , is actually only passable in summer. The solid road surface ends at the bridge over the Vatnsdalsá by Lake Skriðuvatn. The outflow from the lake forms the Breiðdalsá, the main river in the Breiðdalur . The Axarvegur branches off to the west and is a clear shortcut that is not easily navigable. Asphalting begins again at Suðurbyggðarvegur . After 81 km this road ends again at Hringvegur .
