The Mjóifjörður (Eng. "Narrow Fjord") is an approximately 18 km long fjord in the Austurland region of eastern Iceland , between Seyðisfjörður and Norðfjörður .
Its greatest width is about 2 km, with a clear taper in the middle area. Mjóifjörður is tightly bordered on both long sides by steep mountain slopes.
Brekkuþorp
The municipality of Mjóifjörður ( Mjóafjarðarhreppur ) was the smallest in Iceland with 42 inhabitants before it merged with Austurbyggð and Fáskrúðsfjarðarhreppur to form Fjarðabyggð on June 9, 2006 . Brekkuþorp lies on the north bank of the fjord . It is 42 kilometers by road from Egilsstaðir . The Mjóafjarðarvegur over the Mjóafjarðarheiði and is not navigable in winter for a long time. That is why the village is approached twice a week in winter by sea. An old riding path leads over the Gagnheiði to Seyðisfjörður . Road 953 runs along the north bank to the Dalatangi lighthouse .
whaling
About 6 km before the end of the fjord, however, on the south bank on the Asknes headland, a whaling station was operated around 1900 that employed up to 200 people. It was the largest in the world at the time. In 1903 486 whales were landed here, a total of 3200 whales and another whaling station processed around 5200 whales in the fjord. Remnants of the station can still be seen.
