The Mjóafjarðarvegur is a side road in the east of Iceland .
This 47 km long cul-de-sac leads from the ring road south of Egilsstaðir into Mjóifjörður . There is also a traffic observation station at this junction. A picture shows the Mjóafjarðarvegur. On the Mjóafjarðarheiði the road reaches a height of 578 m. Up here it also bridges the Fjarðará, which rises at one of the Bræðravötn and becomes the largest river in the fjord. The road leads down through various switchbacks into the fjord. There it runs along the north bank and becomes Brekkuvegur 9509 in Brekkuþorp . The east-branching section of Mjóafjarðarvegur to the lighthouse of Dalatangi is 15 km long and downgraded to a local access road.
Even if this road is not a highland road , it is not accessible all year round. The road has been almost completely impassable since October 2019 and could only be cleared again on May 20, 2020. The snow depth was up to 5 meters. The place Brekkuþorp in the fjord is approached twice a week in winter by ferry from Neskaupstaður . A plan for the Fjarðarheiðargöng provided for a tunnel from Seyðisfjörður into the Mjóifjörður and a second tunnel from there to the ring road. A third tunnel should be a direct connection to Neskaupstaður. To do this, a new road would have to be built on the south bank of the fjord. Now a direct tunnel is planned between Seyðisfjörður and Egilsstaðir.
