Norbert Visser (born May 9, 1919 in Haarlem ; † November 16, 2003 in Schoorl ) was a Dutch musician and instrument maker .

Live and act

After studying violin at the Conservatory in The Hague, Visser gave concerts and taught for several years. In 1953, through violin maker Karl Weidler, he got to know the ideas of Viennese instrument maker Franz Thomastik about further developments in string instrument making. In the following years he worked together with the violin maker Josef Musil on the development of his own violin model, later known as the Choroi violin. From 1959 Visser began to develop further instruments. Lyre models were created, following on from Edmund Pracht and Lothar Gärtner's construction, as well as new metallophones. With the foundation “Kind und Instrument”, founded in 1964 together with the doctor and curative educator Bernard Lievegoed , the Choroi musical instrument making established itself with the aim of producing instruments in socio-therapeutic workshops based on new sound ideas. In 1966 Norbert Visser founded the socio-therapeutic facility Scorlewald in North Holland. In the years that followed, further wind, string and percussion instruments were created here and in a Europe-wide association of socio-therapeutic workshops. In particular, the children's harp developed in 1968 together with Julius Knierim and Helmut Hofstetter and the pentatonic choroi flute, which has been built in Järna (Sweden) since 1969, have found worldwide distribution.
