Nordic Trophy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nordic Trophy was an international ice hockey tournament for club teams in the Scandinavian countries Sweden and Finland , which existed from 2006 to 2009 and served the teams of the Swedish Elitserien and Finnish SM-liiga as a competitive season preparation. In 2010 it became part of the European Trophy and is also officially its predecessor competition.

history

The Nordic Trophy was launched in 2006 and initially started with eight teams, four from Sweden and four from Finland. This continued in the following year. In 2008 the number of participants increased to ten teams. The success of the competition finally became apparent in 2009 when the number of participants increased to twelve. This made it necessary to organize two separate tournaments, separated by country. In 2010 the Nordic Trophy finally became the European Trophy as a replacement for the canceled tournament of the old Champions Hockey League . With the introduction of the new Champions Hockey League of the same name for the 2014/15 season , the European Trophy was also dissolved.
