Nordingermanland is the northern part of the historical province of Ingermanland in the hinterland of Saint Petersburg . North Germanland stretches between Lake Ladoga and the Neva , the northern and western borders were the Tungelmajoki and Saijanjoki rivers. Under the name of Pohjois-Inkeri , part of this area briefly achieved de facto independence in 1919 when it broke away from Soviet Russia .
