North Korean films are films that have been produced in North Korea .

Like the entire spectrum of art in North Korea, the film also deals exclusively with propaganda topics. So North Korean films are primarily about the glorification of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il , the building of Chuch'e socialism, and the propagation of anti-Japanese and anti-Americanism .

One of the few films that has achieved a certain degree of notoriety beyond the country's borders is The Flower Girl from 1972, which was awarded a special prize at the 18th International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary . Choi Eun-hee was named Best Actress at the 14th Moscow International Film Festival for her performance in Shin Sang-ok's film Sogŭm ( 소금 , 1985) .

Since 1987, every two years now, the Pyongyang International Film Festival (formerly the Pyongyang International Film Festival of the Non-Aligned and other developing countries) has been held in the Pyongyang International Cinema Hall, which was built in 1988 .

Today, however, North Korea does not appear internationally through its own intellectual contributions by the state company SEK-Trickfilmstudio, but rather as a contributor to Hollywood animated films. Since the production costs are extremely low and the quality of the SEK draftsmen is high, Disney has had two productions drawn, partly via subcontractors at SEK: The Lion King (1994) and Pocahontas (1995). With Empress Chung , also a cartoon, there is also a North and South Korean co-production from 2005.
