The Pyongyang International Cinema Hall (평양 국제 영화 회관) is a centrally located movie theater in Pyongyang . National and foreign productions are shown here. It gained international fame because it serves as the location for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Pyongyang International Film Festival , which has been taking place since 1987 .
It opened in May 1988 . The cinema halls each hold 2,000, 600, 300, 100 and two times 50 spectators . The building is located on Yanggak Island ( Chung-guyŏk District ) on the Taedong-gang River . The cinema is connected to the mainland by the Yanggak Bridge .
