The flower girl (original title: 꽃 파는 처녀 , Kkot panŭn ch'ŏnyŏ ) is probably the most internationally famous North Korean film. It was released in 1972 and was directed by Choe Ik-kyu and Pak Hak , who also wrote the script. In the GDR, the film opened in cinemas on September 14, 1973.

The action takes place at the time when Korea was a colony of Japan . The 16-year-old girl Koppun sells flowers on the street in order to be able to pay for the medication for her sick mother. She believes that she has recognized the real reasons for the predicament of the individual, which should lie in the fact that Korea is incorporated into the Japanese Empire . She then joins the anti-Japanese partisan movement under Kim Il-sung to fight for independence.
