The figure belongs to a branch of Gnosis that emphasizes the feminine element of the divine. This Gnostic direction is originally from Syria. Apart from Nag Hammadi, it occurs among the Mandaeans and in Dura Europos . Bishop Epiphanius von Salamis mentions Noreia in his work Panárion .
