Norman Pett

William Norman Pett (born April 12, 1891 in Birmingham , West Midlands , England , † February 16, 1960 in Keymer, Sussex , England) was an English comic book artist and author. He became known in particular through the cartoon character Jane he created .

life and work

After studying drawing at Percy Bradshaw's Press Art School in London , Pett first drew for Punch and children's newspapers. In 1932 he created the comic strip Jane's Journal - or the Diary of a Bright Young Thing , modeled on his wife Mary, who was his model , which was first published on December 5, 1932 in the Daily Mirror . In 1948 Pett Jane had to hand over to his assistant Michael Hubbard, whereupon he created a similar figure with Susie , whose adventures were printed in the Sunday Dispatch newspaper .
