Norman Rush
Norman Rush (born October 24, 1933 in San Francisco , California , USA ) is an American author .
Life
Rush grew up in Oakland , California and attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania . As conscientious objectors of conscience he was during the Korean War condemned prison to two years, but after nine months on probation dismissed. After fifteen years as a bookseller, he became a teacher. Having had more time since then, he began to write and sent a manuscript of a short story about his teaching experience to The New Yorker , which was published there in 1978.
In 1978 Rush went to Botswana in southern Africa with his wife as an employee of the US Peace Corps . The stay there until 1983 was the basis for his collection of short stories from 1986 entitled Whites . His next two books are also set against the backdrop of Africa. His latest novel, Subtle Bodies , takes the reader to rural New York State , where the author lives with his wife on a farm in Rockland County .
Rush was interviewed in 2010 by The Paris Review in its 194 issue of The Art of Fiction, No. 205.

- 1991: National Book Award in the Prose (Fiction) category for Mating .
