history

The NID is one of the oldest DIN standards committees (founded in 1927). The oldest DIN standard in his area of responsibility was first published in 1928: DIN 1501 "Libraries - Journals - Order bar on the first cover page".

Standard areas

Standardization work is defined for the following areas and areas:

  • Data elements,
  • Transliteration,
  • Library management,
  • Performance indicators for libraries,
  • Numbering systems,
  • Coding systems,
  • Conservation and
  • Archive and records management.

As a result of the standardization work in the field of transliteration and transcription, transcriptions from Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Armenian, Georgian, Arabic, Persian, Kurdish or Chinese letters or characters into the Latin alphabet should be mentioned.

In the area of numbering systems, the standardization projects and results on the international standard numbers for books and other monographic publications (ISBN) as well as for serial compilations (ISSN) are known. Further international numbering systems have been developed for sound and video recordings (ISRC), for music (ISMN and ISWC) or for collections (ISCI). The NID has also been involved in the development and updating of the ISO 3166 series country codes since 1971. In the field of inventory preservation, the NID oversees standardization projects with requirements for the construction of archives and libraries or for the storage and long-term protection of archive and library material. In addition, standardization projects in the field of information technology are supervised. This includes projects such as digital long-term archiving, metadata formats, RFID technologies, persistent identifiers or file formats such as PDF.
