Georg Stumpf jun. attended the HTL in Vienna ( building construction department ), which he completed with the Matura . From 1991 to 1993, he completed his studies in commercial science at the Vienna University of Economics and Business within two years , which he completed with the academic degree Magister in order to take over the construction company of his already sick father as quickly as possible. At the same time he studied law . He did not graduate from this course, he was still missing an exam.

Career

Millennium Tower; Vienna's second tallest building

Millennium Tower / City

Beginning in 1997, at almost 25 years of age, one million schillings (75,000 euros) start-up capital from his father - a friend of the former Creditanstalt bank manager and former Federal Chancellor Franz Vranitzky - a banking consortium consisting of the Bank Austria subsidiary Creditanstalt and a Commerzbank subsidiary as financier, Stumpf jun. his own company and built the Vienna Millennium Tower on Handelskai on the Danube as the client and owner . At 202 meters high, the office tower is the second tallest building in Austria and was completed in 1999. In the following two years, the Millennium City was added , which opened in 2001.

In July 2003 Stumpf sold the Millennium City with the tower for 360 million euros to the Hamburg fund company MPC Münchmeyer Petersen Capital , which after deducting the costs brought him a profit of around 215 million euros (→ Millennium Tower, section owner ).

Criticism was raised of Stumpf in connection with the construction of the Millennium Tower. According to his own statements, he would have complied with all legal requirements ("I wanted to make the best possible use of the property") and only exhausted all limits structurally. The Vienna City Council approved a building height of 120, at most 140 meters, for the office tower and a usable area of 10,000 m² for the shopping center. In fact, however, he raised his tower much higher to 202 meters and built the shopping center with 15,000 m² much larger than submitted. Despite violent protests by the Viennese Greens, the authorities retrospectively approved the “defective structures”.

"The Millennium Tower can be found on every second postcard in Vienna today, but it was never my intention to build a landmark," says Stumpf. Building was a business, and when it comes to business, only one thing matters: money. "

Swiss holdings

After the property was sold, he became an investor . In addition to several other projects, he founded the industrial holding company Victory with Mirko Kovats . Together with Ronny Pecik , Kovats and Stumpf took over their Victory through the Swiss company OC Oerlikon . After differences, it came to the separation in 2006, Kovats got out of the Victory . From April 2006 to May 2008, Stumpf was Chairman of the Board of Directors of OC Oerlikon Corporation AG . The separation with Pecik occurred because of "different strategic interests", the industrial holdings of the Victory were divided between the two. He got out of the Victory and took over the 100% stake in the German high-tech group M + W Zander (since 2018 Exyte ), as well as the solar technology company intico solar , which was founded in 2007 . The holding company Victory and its 12% stake in the then ailing technology group Oerlikon remained with Pecik.

In Switzerland, the investments made by Georg Stumpf and his partner Ronny Pecik in Swiss companies have been criticized and they are sometimes referred to as raiders because of their approach . When Sulzer AG was taken over , it later emerged that the transaction was in violation of the Swiss Stock Exchange Act.

Criminal proceedings for violation of the Stock Exchange Act

The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA filed a criminal complaint against Georg Stumpf and his partner Ronny Pecik, as well as Wiktor Wekselberg at the beginning of 2009 with the Federal Department of Finance . You were accused of having breached the reporting requirements when purchasing stakes in the engineering company Sulzer . The proceedings were discontinued in October 2010 for a compensation payment totaling ten million francs.

In January 2010 Georg Stumpf was again due to alleged non-notification of a group on the sale of a block of shares of the former Unaxis (today OC Oerlikon ) of Victory on Vekselberg, along with Ronny Pecik and Viktor Vekselberg by the Federal Department of Finance each have a penance of 40 million Swiss francs imposed. Since the Russian Vice Prime Minister and Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin then complained about this judgment and these political entanglements would strain relations with Russia, the case went to the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona . Stumpf, Wekselberg and Pecik were then acquitted on September 23, 2010 by the Federal Criminal Court and the fines no longer apply. After the Federal Department of Finance analyzed the reasons for the judgment in detail, they decided not to challenge the judgment before the Swiss Federal Court in Lausanne.

Private

Georg Stumpf and his partner Patricia Schalko have an adult son (Gianni) and since July 9, 2011 a second son named Winston. In contrast to his sisters, the “millionaire heirs” Kathi and Gabi Stumpf, who are to be assigned to the “professional guests” of the so-called Austrian side -gazing society, the Stumpf-Schalko couple are considered to be public shy.

Who is repeatedly referred to in the media as the “inventor of the Millennium Tower”, “real estate mogul” and others. The multimillionaire named Stumpf was listed in Trend magazine in 2008 among the 100 richest Austrians in 24th place. In 2007 he and his partner built a luxury villa in the style of an Italian palazzo at the address Himmelstrasse in Grinzing in Vienna's noble district of Döbling for around 15 million euros . He is in possession of an Airbus A319 , registered in the Austrian aircraft register as OE-LGS , whose 144 seats have been reduced to 22, as well as a Bombardier Global Express private jet, registered under OE-IGS.

In his youth, Stumpf was on his way to becoming a professional golfer and has won several junior championship titles in Austria. At the age of 18, however, he ended his golf career, but was still able to keep his handicap 0 (2006), although according to his own statements he only goes on the course once a year.
