Norr Mälarstrand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Norr Mälarstrand is a street on Kungsholmen in Stockholm , it runs in an east-west direction on the north bank of the Riddarfjärden and begins at Stockholm Stadshus .

The road was planned between 1863 and 1864 and laid out at the end of the 19th century. Previously there were only various jetties and numerous small businesses here. Now a tree-planted boulevard with fortified quays and parks was to be created. For the Stockholm street name revision in 1885, the street got its current name, just like Söder Mälarstrand , which is located on the southern bank of Riddarfjärden, Strandvägen further east and many other streets in the city.

The Stockholm Stadshus was inaugurated in mid-summer 1923; it is located at the eastern end of Norr Mälarstrand and is the most striking building. The typical residential houses in the functionalist style in the middle part of the street were planned and built in the 1930s; almost all of them face the street with their short side. The Swedish explorer Sven Hedin lived in one of the houses, Norr Mälarstrand No. 66, from 1935 until his death in 1952. In the early 1940s, a narrow park was created at the west end of the street according to the plans of the Stockholm city gardener Holger Blom .
